IPOB replaces sit-at- home with EED
The sit-at-home protest initiated by the proscribed Independent People of Biafra, IPOB, in South Eastern States of Nigeria every Monday of the week in demand for the release of their leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, who was arrested and incarcerated by the Federal Government in August 2021, and has declined the socio-economic activities and businesses in the region, has finally been put to rest and replaced with Economic Empowerment Day.
This was disclosed by IPOB spokesman, Emma Powerful, at the weekend in a statement complying to a handwritten letter by Nnamdi Kanu and published by his counsel demanding an end to the sit-at-home protest.
Powerful said, “Economic Empowerment Day connotes a day set aside for mass mobilization of Biafrans to devote their resources and means towards reversing the sharp and unprecedented decline in the economic, educational, and social needs of our people occasioned by the prolong sit-at-home.
“During the exercise, Biafrans are encouraged to embark on massive deployment of their resources for the empowerment of the educationally disadvantaged and poverty-ridden population of our people.
“Though education, employment, health services, sense of identity and community, our people and indeed, the Eastern region can begin to thrive and grow.”
It would be recalled that the sit-at-home policy did not augur well for the South East as businesses, schools, banks and most productive institutions were forced to close in fear of being attacked by IPOB enforcers of the protest.
The policy which spanned for two years adding long weekends to South Eastern states, frustrated many business and retarded academic pursuit of students and enhanced deceleration of socio-economic activities.
