By Wole Adedoyin
Three years have passed since the publication of END SARS Rhythms, a poignant collection that reverberates with the spirit of resilience against police brutality. On the 20th of October 2023, Nigerians commemorated the third anniversary of the END SARS Protests, reflecting on the progress made since those pivotal moments. Originating from a Twitter campaign in 2017, the #ENDSARS movement gained global attention, shedding light on the corrupt practices, brutality, and human rights violations perpetrated by the Nigeria Police.
Global awareness of police misconduct has sparked movements worldwide, and Nigeria is no exception. In 2017, Nigerians initiated the #ENDSARS campaign on Twitter, demanding the disbandment of the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) unit of the Nigeria police, a call that gained momentum in October 2020, leading to widespread protests and online activism.
END SARS Rhythms, a product of SYNW and IHRAF’s EndSARS National Poetry Competition, stands as a testament to the resilience and creativity of the Nigerian youth. Since its publication, the anthology has inspired academic discourse. Notable contributions include the research essay by Inyang Eme Ita, exploring the themes of police brutality and social protest in the poetry of Frank Kaliati and Nwokeabia Ifeanyi John.

Additionally, a groundbreaking academic paper titled “Poetic Protest and Testimony in Endsars Rhythms,” authored by Jayne I. Owan and Onyekachi Peter Onuoha from the University of Calabar, delves into the profound impact of poetry as a medium of protest and testimony during the EndSARS movement. The paper emphasizes the role of art in social movements, preserving memories, and challenging societal norms.
The paper meticulously analyzes poems from EndSARS Rhythms, such as “State Armed Robbers Squad (SARS)” by Frank Kaliati and “EndSARS! LAWMAKERS, OR LAWBREAKERS” by Olude Peter Sunday, among others. These poems have become a literary testimony for victims and survivors, representing the collective voice against police brutality.
END SARS Rhythms continues to stand as a powerful reminder of the resilience of the Nigerian people and their unwavering commitment to justice and human rights.
This academic exploration underscores the enduring impact of END SARS Rhythms, demonstrating how literature continues to serve as a catalyst for social change and justice.
The END SARS Rhythms continues to be a beacon of hope, inspiring generations to come and reminding us all that the power of poetry and art can fuel movements, challenge injustice, and pave the way for a more just and equitable society.
