The Society of Young Nigerian Writers has extended its warmest congratulations to Dr Obari Gomba, author of the outstanding literary work, “Grit”, for clinching the prestigious 2023 NLNG Prize for Literature.

The announcement was made on Friday night during an exquisite award ceremony held at the Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos.

Obari Gomba’s literary brilliance shone through as his play, “Grit”, triumphed over stiff competition, including notable works like “The Ojuelegba Crossroads” by Abideen Abolaji Ojomu and “Yamtarawala – The Warrior King” by Henry Akubuiro, among 140 other entries. His exceptional storytelling and profound insights captured the hearts of the esteemed panel of judges, securing him the coveted $100,000 literature prize generously sponsored by Nigeria LNG Limited.

Wole Adedoyin, the President of SYNW, expressed his delight at Gomba’s well-deserved victory, stating, “We are immensely proud of Obari Gomba for this remarkable achievement. His dedication to the art of storytelling and his ability to captivate audiences with his words are truly commendable. This recognition is a testament to his talent, creativity, and the depth of his literary prowess.”

The Chairperson of the NLNG Prize for Literature Advisory Board, Professor Akachi Adimora-Ezeigbo, praised “Grit” as a masterpiece that transcends its covers. She emphasized the play’s ability to resonate with readers on a profound level, making it a deserving recipient of the esteemed award.

Gomba’s work not only exemplifies the rich literary heritage of Nigeria but also serves as an inspiration to aspiring writers across the nation. His win reinforces the importance of nurturing and celebrating literary talent, encouraging writers to explore new horizons and push the boundaries of creativity.

As an organisation dedicated to promoting and supporting young Nigerian writers, SYNW takes immense pride in celebrating Obari Gomba’s achievement. His success underscores the importance of fostering a vibrant literary community in Nigeria, one where creativity flourishes, and voices are heard.

SYNW congratulated Obari Gomba once again on this outstanding accomplishment and looks forward to witnessing his continued contributions to the literary world. His victory serves as a beacon of inspiration for all young writers, encouraging them to pursue their passion for literature with unwavering dedication and determination.
