The Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress have jointly suspended the indefinite strike billed for Tuesday following the removal of fuel subsidy.

It would be recalled that the Nigeria Labour Congress had directed its affiliate member Unions across the country to mobilise and shut down the country following the refusal of government to adhere to the seven points demand made by the NLC and the TUC to ameliorate the suffering of the teeming Nigerian Workers and the impoverished masses of the country.

The President-General of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) Comrade (Prince) Dr. Adewale Adeyanju in the same vein equally ordered that all the nation’s Seaports, Jetties, Oil & Gas platforms and Terminals be shut down accordingly for operations.

But after the outcome of emergency meeting summoned on Monday, between the Federal Government and labour leaders held, the NLC and TUC had jointly agreed to suspend the strike to allow for implementation of the NLC demands.

Consequently, the National Executive Council (NEC) of the NLC had directed that all its affiliate members should direct their members to return to work tomorrow, October 3, 2023 as the planned indefinite strike has been suspended.

Comrade Adeyanju, the Deputy President of the Nigeria Labour Congress had equally directed that all members of the Maritime sector should resume work tomorrow as instructed by the Nigeria Labour Congress.

The NEC meeting of NLC resolved as follows:
that the president should continue with the negotiation with the federal government to ensure a concrete agreement is reached between the organize labour and federal government.
That the promise made by the FG to pay 35k to state and federal workers and other private sector workers is accepted. That the 25k offered as palliative to the indigent and other vulnerable people on the society is accepted, That the supply of compressed natural gas CNG buses by the FG should have timeline and is accepted. That the buses will be distributed to all the states of the federation.

That the state government should implement the wage award of 35k without prolonged negotiation.

That there should be a signed agreement that could ensure faster implementation.
That the tax on the 35k as wage award should be waived. That the State Council of NLC is at liberty to negotiate higher wage award for state workers and private workers.
That the refinery in Portharcourt and Warri are to be in operation by the end of December. The NLC president submitted that, The FG has agreed to implement all demands made by the organize labour. That the meeting of 03:00PM today at the presidential villa is to harmonize the agreement and get it signed by all parties. That at the end of the meeting today, Nigerians and workers will be informed of what transpired between FG and organize labour.
That if the FG refused to sign the agreement, the strike will continue.
The FG and Labour are presently meeting at the villa to enter the final agreement.

Note that, the 35k is for both Federal and State workers including informal sector workers and pensioners.
The 25k is for those who are not working and it will be for a stipulated period of time.
The 35k is an addition to salaries of all workers in Nigeria in both public and private sectors.
It is important to inform you that the salary of workers in Nigeria is now 30k+35k=65k.
The NLC FCT Chairman will address the workers online after the meeting for the signing of agreement at the Aso villa.
Thank you.
