SYNW celebrates Cyprian Ekwensi’s 102nd posthumous birthday
The Society of Young Nigerian Writers has commemorated the 102nd posthumous birthday of the late Cyprian Ekwensi, an extraordinary Nigerian author and literary icon.
Ekwensi’s enduring legacy in the literary world is an inspiration to writers and readers alike.
In an official statement, the President of SYNW, Wole Adedoyin emphasized the significance of remembering Ekwensi’s birthday, underscoring his invaluable contributions to the enhancement of Nigeria’s literary and reading culture.
Ekwensi’s literary prowess was showcased through hundreds of short stories, radio and television scripts, as well as numerous novels, including acclaimed children’s books. His 1954 masterpiece ‘People of the City’ marked his foray into international literary acclaim, capturing hearts worldwide.
One of Ekwensi’s powerful works, ‘Drummer Boy’ (1960), offered a poignant portrayal of the wandering, homeless life of a street artist named Benjamin ‘Kokoro’ Aderounmu. Additionally, ‘Jagua Nana’ (1961), a compelling narrative about a Pidgin-speaking Nigerian woman who embarks on a journey from her past, remains one of his most celebrated novels.
The late author’s contributions to literature have not gone unnoticed. Ekwensi’s remarkable talent earned him prestigious accolades, including the Dag Hammarskjöld International Prize in Literature in 1968 and the Nigeria Book Fair Trust’s Life Achievement Award in 2004. His influence resonates in the hearts of literary enthusiasts and aspiring writers, shaping the landscape of Nigerian literature.
