The Society of Young Nigerian Writers gathered in solemn remembrance today to honor the enduring legacy of the late distinguished author, Professor Festus Iyayi, on what would have been his 76th posthumous birthday.

In a statement by the SYNW President, Wole Adedoyin, said Festus Iyayi, a luminary of Nigerian literature, illuminated the sociopolitical landscape of contemporary Nigeria through his compelling realist novels. As a former president of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, he fearlessly advocated for the rights of the working class. His impactful presence in both literature and academia resonates even after his untimely demise in a tragic road accident en route to Kano on 12th November 2013.

Iyayi’s literary contributions are immortalised in his seminal works: “Violence” (1979), “The Contract” (1982), “Heroes” (1986), and “Awaiting Court Martial” (1996). Through these masterpieces, he vividly exposed the stark realities of poverty and disenfranchisement faced by the majority of Nigerians. His characters, often marred by the corrosive effects of corruption, bravely confronted the ruling class’s oppression.

In each narrative, Iyayi passionately portrayed the tragic cycle wherein the oppressed, burdened by their oppressors, inadvertently turned on one another. Yet, amidst the darkness, he wove threads of hope. His characters, resilient and defiant, called for collective action to reclaim their civil rights and secure the future of their nation.

“Today, as we celebrate Festus Iyayi’s 76th posthumous birthday, we not only honor his literary brilliance but also his profound understanding of humanity’s fragility. His words continue to inspire generations, reminding us of the enduring power of literature to ignite social change,” the statement said.
