Why government agencies leadership need restructuring to be purposeful
Muhammed Salihu Maigoro
Government agencies are organisations owned by the government that are responsible for the oversight and administration of specific functions of a specific sector or field. Some of them are supposed to be solution developers. But unfortunately, sometimes turned to be the caused of organisation backward or downfall. The success of these agencies is cumulative and can easily be seen in the respective sector and field if we are truly making progress.
Making progress in the organisation deeply rely in the hands of proprietors who are jealous to develop their ministry by inventing and accepting modern changes educationally, and use it appropriately in place of conservative.
The problems of leadership in the country is not just at the presidency and the government houses. Nigerians have this culture of frequent trips abroad a few weeks after they appointed as the CEOs of agencies. They can not even settled down to understand the organisation appointed to lead, they are exploring abroad with the money have not made.
When a CEO assumed office, the first thing is to know the source of income of the organisation and the problems organisation is facing, research on it and evaluate the outcome. Good or bad sit down and settle it, make sure that, that organization is booming well functionally and financially, before looking for any abroad extra experience workshop.
We have this mentality that the solutions to our problems reside abroad when some of the solutions are right in our hands at home. We can tackle any problem without going to abroad, but until if we appropriately use the knowledge we have and practice our research outcome on the problematic areas.
We end of finishing 5 years term without a major value added to the organisation and the country despite the huge annual budgetary allocations, which it suppose to solve all basics needed. Why the trips abroad when you are yet to settle down to produce a strategic plan and a roadmap to reposition the agency you are appointed to lead.
Dear CEOs of government agencies, new and old, we are blessed with human resources in this country to drive positive development. It’s just about making the right choices. Some of these human resources are taken away from us by other countries everyday. Developing their own nation and tent to employ us after, working under our stolen properties. You have to Settle down to study the organisation. Study where the organisation is coming from, where it is at the moment and where it is suppose to be. Match that with where you want it to be.
Understand why you are appointed for the organisation. Put together a functional team as your think-tank to develop a purposeful strategic plan. Create the right working environment. Together with them, you will put up a purposeful roadmap that will reposition the organisation.
And with the roadmap, you can travel abroad for the right reasons and you will have a purposeful 5 years.
