In the aftermath of the recently concluded Association of Nigerian Authors Convention and election, Cameroonian writer Nkwetatang Sampson Nguekie, has raised serious concerns about the legitimacy of the process that ushered in Dr Akanbi Usman, as the new ANA President.

Nguekie, who attended the convention, has described the event as marred by irregularities, labeling the election as sham, fraudulent, and unconstitutional.

Nguekie was a prominent literary figure with a history of charitable contributions to ANA, expressed disappointment in the lack of transparency during the election. He pointed out that as the largest body of writers in Africa, ANA should have distinguished itself as a citadel of transparency, justice, and human integrity. Instead, he alleges that the organization has blundered in its leadership transition.

The writer draws parallels between the economic challenges faced by Cameroon and Nigeria, emphasizing the need for organizations like ANA to stand as beacons of fairness. Nguekie criticises the treatment of delegates during the convention, “highlighting the contrast between the hospitality he experiences in Cameroon and the reported struggles of Nigerian writers.”

Nguekie also reflects on his charitable contributions to ANA, expressing disappointment at what he perceives as a lack of reciprocity from Nigerian writers. He questions the character of the newly elected ANA President, Dr. Akanbi, suggesting a lack of concern for others and an obsession with self-image.

The message delves into the alleged manipulation of the election process, citing conversations with senior ANA members predicting outcomes based on factors unrelated to merit. Nguekie warns that the decision to sideline competent former EXCO members could have detrimental effects on the association’s future.

Nguekie advised the newly elected ANA President, Dr Akanbi Usman, to consider stepping down with honour, suggesting that he may have been used by the outgoing ANA President to settle scores. Nguekie urged Dr. Akanbi to prioritize integrity and self-esteem over fleeting praises, emphasising the importance of leadership and cooperation within the literary community.
