The Kano State Zonal Commander, National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, Barrister Abdullahi Shuaibu Babale, said on Sunday confirmed that the agency successfully rescued more than 1000 victims of human trafficking, survivors of Gender-Based Violence, and returnees within the zone within the last one year.
Babale made the disclosure at one-day retreat on Human Trafficking and Irregular Migration in Nigeria, organized by the Network of Civil Society Organizations Against Child Trafficking, Abuse, and Labour, in collaboration with NAPTIP, held in Kano on Sunday.
According to Barrister Babale, the rescued victims were thereafter counseled, rehabilitated and successfully reintegration with their respective families.
Also, he disclosed that the agency is actively engaging with key stakeholders at the grassroots level toward combating the menace of human trafficking.
Furthermore, the zonal commander stated that NAPTIP carried out various awareness campaigns in schools, border communities and media platforms to raise awareness about human trafficking.
During the retreat, Muhd Ali Mashi, the Kano State Coordinator of NACTAL, emphasized the importance of bringing together state and non-state actors to fight against trafficking in persons and irregular migration.
The retreat also witnessed the inauguration of a task force committee at the NACTAL level, which will support the existing task force committee established by the Kano State government two years ago to curtail trafficking in persons.
Dr Sa’adatu Sa’idu Bala, the Permanent Secretary of the Kano State Ministry for Women Affairs, highlighted the collaborative efforts of the Kano State Government, security agencies, and other stakeholders in curbing human trafficking.
She stressed the need for collective action in combating the menace, pointing out that the government cannot address the issue alone.
