….. tuition fees now with over 100% increment – Students
Some students of the Federal University of Kashere, Pindiga emirate, Akko Local Government Area of Gombe State, have suspended their planned protest scheduled for Sunday.
Our correspondent reports that the students for fear of been victimised suspended the protest following the management’s increase in 2023/2024 tuition.
In a post shared on social media, the students alleged that security operatives have taken charge of sensitive protest routes, warning the others to botch the plan.
“It has already been leaked to the school authority that students are planning to embark on a peaceful protest, therefore the FUK security unit in collaboration with other security personnel had a meeting to mount the gate one and to arrest any student seen around gate one. However, to avoid molestation from any of the security agencies, Guys what’s the solution?” the post partly read.
A student who begged anonymity told our correspondent that the school has increased over 100 per cent of its tuition fees, adding that it may make some of them to dropout or look for the money desperately in order to sustain their studies.
According to him, “Previously fresh students paid as low as N40,000 as total cost of registration in English Language,
Faculty of Humanities presently to register for 2023/2024 academic session final year students pay N77,000 in English department, while 200 and 300 levels are paying N90,000”
Another student from Faculty of Education, Department of Integrated Science who pleaded for anonymity for fear of victimisation said, “I’m studying integrated science and as I speak I have been running around for N110,000 tuition fees, whereas as freshers then we were paying appropriately N40,000 with remita. If I don’t get the money I may risk dropping out. This will increase spate of hustle, struggle, by hook or crook and you know what that means.”
When contacted on the school’s tuition fee increase and the use of security to truncate the students protest, the Public Relations Officer of FUK Mrs Janet Ezekiel, said, “All students are to abide by the rules governing their stay on Campus
FUK has one of the lowest charges in the entire north, the Management has been kind not to hike the fees beyond reasonable level.”
