Youths in Borno State now drink 10-day human urine to get intoxicated, according to the State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.

The Commander of Narcotics of the Agency, Iliyasu Mamman Mani, disclosed this in a statement issued to Journalists in Maiduguri, Thursday, January 4.

He listed other psychoactive substances taken by the youths as cannabis Sativa, Cough syrup with codeine, ICE, Tramadol, Rohypnol, Diazepam, Pentozocine, Rubber solution, glue, Gutter dirt, Toilet fumes, Lizard dung, Lipton soaked in gin, camel urine and Mentholated spirit in soft drinks.

“The current leadership of Borno State command under my watch when I assumed the mantle of leadership in the month of July, 2023 and has continued to yield positive results in both demand and supply suppression in the State as the NDLEA have fought a dogged and dedicated War Against Drug Abuse on all aspects of the drug menace”, he said.

“Unfortunately, the issue of substance Abuse is even getting challenging especially with the involvement of young teens in the abuse of new psychoactive substances especially women,” Mani lamented.

“Despite all these we must not lose our hope as the Agency has strengthen its efforts towards prevention strategy through establishment of remodelled counselling/ Rehab centre within the premises of Borno State Command,” the commander said.

He said the Borno State Command of the NDLEA has also established Drop-in centres across all our tertiary institution aimed to serve as Drug Abuse research centres as well as intelligence platform within the university communities for the benefit of all and sundry.

He said the War Against Drug Abuse in Borno State Command’s account of stewardship in the year 2023 have recorded tremendous achievements.

The achievements, Mani revealed, included the seizure of 4.5 tonnes of assorted substances; the arrest of 863 comprises of 845 males and 18 females; 53 convictions; counselling of 736 persons; rehabilitation of 14 persons; 156 sensitization campaigns; and the establishment of a remodelled rehabilitation/counselling center.

In the area of public enlightenment and drug abuse prevention, Mani thanked all NDLEA partners and other stakeholders for their assistance and support in whatever means.

“As it is said, we are still asking for more so that we will continue with the aggressive concept of War Against Drug Abuse prevention mechanism for our yet unborn generation,” he appealed.

The commander described drug war as the responsibility of every citizen devoid of religious or cultural affiliation, maintaining, “There is also the need for security and law enforcement agencies to cooperate, synergise, collaborate and work together for the good people of Borno State.”
