The Federal Operations Unit of Nigeria Customs Service Zone ‘D’ Bauchi has intercepted smuggled Petrol Motor Spirit worth N14.2 million between Nigeria-Cameroon border in one month.
Mr Odaudu Salefu, Federal Controller disclosed this at a media briefing in Yola on Monday.
He said that the success was recorded between April 19 to May 19.
According to him, one of the dangers of smuggling is destruction of the economy of the country.
Salefu said the fight against smuggling is the responsibility of everyone to compliment the effort of President Bola Tinubu in reviving the economy of the country.
“The unit is saddled with the responsibility of enforcing customs laws, implementing government fiscal policies and suppressing smuggling within the zone.
“I want to use this medium to appeal to patriotic citizens and the need to provide credible information to the service in order to curb the menace of these unscrupulous smugglers who are bent on crippling the economy of this great nation”, he said.
He said the seizures showcased were achieved as a result of robust information gathering and credible intelligence sharing by other customs units such as CIU, customs police and resilient patrol of the FOU Zone.
He further warned other custom officers from conniving with smugglers to achieve their aim.
According to him, any person found wanting will face a disciplinary committee in Abuja.
“Our operative’s actions are in accordance with all extant laws as enshrined in the Nigeria Customs Service Act (NCSA 2023) as amended.
“Particularly sections 245 (provides for detention, seizure and condemnations of goods) and 226 (power to patrol free)” he explained.
