The Gombe State Coordinator of Standard Organisation of Nigeria, Yakzum James, has set records straight on the alleged illegal refinery in residential area in federal low-cost.
PERISCOPE NIGERIA recalls on December 28 that Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps had paraded Abubakar Aliyu, for illegally siting alleged refinery in the state.
The NSCDC Gombe State Commandant Muhammad Bello, had handed over the case to SON for laboratory investigation of the exhibits.
Also, Aliyu had insisted that what was sited was pyrolysis constructed locally alongside his collaborators around his piece of land close to his abode.
Online sources say Pyrolysis is a thermochemical treatment, which can be applied to any organic (carbon-based) product. It can be done on pure products as well as mixtures. In this treatment, material is exposed to high temperature, and in the absence of oxygen goes through chemical and physical separation into different molecules.
Disclosing the content of its investigation after about five months to PERISCOPE NIGERIA, James, said the pyrolysis was wrongly situated following the environmental hazard, adding that his organisation didn’t prosecute Aliyu after examining his motive which was not criminal but to improve the economy.
James said, “By ending of December 2023, there was report of people producing something emitting some offensive fumes irritating to the eyes and nose
“NSCDC in collaboration with SON decided to find out and found out that allegedly then that he was doing something like refining but when we investigated we saw it was paralysis. It’s a process of taking new or used engine oil for vehicles that has single or multiple stroke engines to convert to diesel.
“You know engine oil or diesel comes from crude oil in different categories. He is a science-driven person we noticed that it was the training he went for that he was taught how to do pyrolysis. What he was taught was not really safe, the processes had issues.”
Explaining further the SON boss noted that Aliyu sourced his raw materials locally, adding “Some of the things he was using were locally fabricated and were not safe. We looked at the motive, we noticed the sincerity of purpose.
In the test we did we noticed that there were parameters he failed. So far, he (Aliyu) has acquired empty land around Kwami where he will launch into this, as he was asked to leave the neighbourhood in order to reduce dangers they were exposed to.”
