The human rights liberty access and peace defenders of Nigeria has called on the Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, and Delta State Independent Electoral Commission to ensure equity and justice in the forthcoming local government elections in the state.
This was contained in a statement issued by Comrade Anthony Asakitikpi, the South-South zonal acting chairman of the advocacy group, which was obtained by PERISCOPE NIGERIA.
While appreciating governor Sheriff for being gracious to Deltans,he further said that “the governor should not be a dictator to DSIEC nor impose the electoral decisions of Deltans like the previous administration does, where only PDP sweeps all the 25 local government chairmanship and the councilorship positions in the state.”
“The governor should also know that if he influences or dictates to DSIEC, his second term will be at stake,” the statement added, citing the first tenure of Governor James Ibori, where some other political parties emerged, noting that from Uduaghan to Okowa administrations “were dictatorship era where the voice of the electorate was not heard, the popularity of the various political parties and their candidates should be exercised through free and fair elections not dictatorship,” the statement partly read.
On political thuggery, Asakitikpi called on all political parties to call their supporters to order to avoid breach of peace, “We also use this medium to call on all civil societies in the state to come out in their large numbers in monitoring of the forth coming local government elections in their various local government and wards,” he added.
