The Emir of Gombe Alhaji Abubakar Shehu III has been appointed as the first Chancellor of North-Eastern University.
Announcing this at the Emir’s palace Chairman of NEU Board of Trustee, Umaru Maigari, who was represented by Alhaji Awwal Babayo, said the monarch’s virtues were overwhelming adding that it would impact the varsity’s growth and development.
Our correspondent reports that appointment of a Chancellor aligns with
Section 10.1.2 of the National Universities Commission’s code of governance for private
universities.
Maigari said, “This esteemed position, traditionally seeks a prominent individual, and icon of unity. In this case, the person of His Royal Highness meets all these qualities, to serve as the
ceremonial head of the university.
“These sterling qualities have been the guiding principles of His
Royal Highness’ reign, echoing the principles that guided his
forefather Modibbo Bubayero in the execution of the Jihad under
Shehu Usmanu Ɗanfodio. He has been executing the leadership
mandates he inherited on the Gombe throne with excellence,
promoting unity, philanthropy, and the protection of the weak and vulnerable members of society.
“It is in this respect that the
university found him worthy of the honour of being appointed as
the first Chancellor of the North-Eastern University, Gombe.”
While extolling the traditional ruler’s leadership Maigari added, “Your
leadership will undoubtedly inspire us to achieve new heights of academic excellence and community development. We thank you very much for accepting to serve as the first Chancellor of our
great university.”
Responding, Emir Abubakar while accepting the appointment lauded the process saying that his principles of integrity, honesty align with dictates of the institution.
He said, “I am particularly pleased that the process that culminated into my
appointment was informed by such superlative qualities as integrity,
commitment, reliability, and passion for the promotion of education. These
values are the cornerstones of any successful institution, and I am proud to
be associated with a university that places such importance on them. I firmly believe that a commitment to integrity and reliability is crucial for the long-term success and credibility of any academic institution.”
