…says educational dev’t should go beyond lip service
The Gombe State Deputy Governor, Dr Manassah Jatau, on Tuesday lamented the recent hike in school fees of federal tertiary institutions across the country.

Jatau gave the indication when he received in audience National Executive Council of Gombe State Students Association in his office.
According to him, the hike in fees at this time of economic hardship amounts to killing education.

The deputy governor who was particular about the recent increase of school fees in Federal University of Kashere from about N60,000 to about N120,000 and an alleged desire to increase to N150,000 said “it is to the disadvantage of many students who are coming from very poor background.”
Jatau called on the student unions across the country to articulate their concerns and forward through their national body to ensure this does not continue so that the very poor will be able to go to schools.

He said their administration has prioritised education and as reversed the negative indices of poor performance of students in WAEC and NECO and would continue to provide the platform for students to perform better in the state.
He further explained that the government has established five mega schools in the three senatorial districts that can admit 3000 students all in an effort to ensure making education accessible.

Responding on the issue of reopening the the students scholarship the deputy governor assured the GOSSA EXCO of finding out the problem with the portal with a view of making them enjoy scholarship to ease their problems.
Speaking earlier, National President, Gombe State Students Association Al’amin Abubakar, the Vice President, Mohammed Taufik Aliyu and the Speaker, Bashir Suleman said they were in the Deputy Governor’s office to solicit for the reopening of students scholarship portal to allow them enjoy scholarship and ease their problems.
