Gombe Local Government Chairman Barrister Sani Ahmad-Haruna, says the Supreme Court’s judgement won’t affect much of operations in his council, due practice already in place.
Ahmad-Haruna whom doubles as State Chairman Association of Local Government of Nigeria, commended the ruling as it clearly defines the responsibilities, functions of the third tier.
He made this disclosure on Thursday in a phone interview with our correspondent, while reacting to the Supreme Court’s judgement granting LGAs full autonomy.
Ahmad-Haruna said, “In particular I will speak for Gombe State, because this is where I’m. I believe it’s a good thing for democracy that the court had decided in favour of local government by clearly defining roles and responsibilities of the third tier of government. Even though, we in Gombe State, I don’t think it will affect much of our operations because its always been like that in fact the state has been supportive of some of the local governments that can’t be able to discharge their responsibilities even salaries some of the local governments can’t even pay.
“So, it has to be a kind of joint effort between the state government and the local government which is supposed to be so where we can be able to support the state government and where we have the strength we should do it all of us our focus is on the citizenry.”
While enumerating the synergy in Gombe in line with due process, the Gombe LG boss said the ruling will ensure certain adjustments, “I believe it’s something good although there are areas of adjustment for the state to ensure we fully comply with what the Supreme Court judgement says but in terms of operations all the monies earmarked for local governments always go to LGAs in Gombe. I know, in terms of what we do, our day to day operations there are certain adjustments to reflect the Supreme Court’s judgement,” Ahmad-Haruna added.
