The Gombe State Government has embarked on a 7.5 km gully erosion control project worth ₦3,984,497,900.63 to protect vulnerable communities.
According to the Commissioner of Water, Environment, and Forest Resources, Hon. Mohammed Saidu Fawu, the project aims to construct reinforced concrete drains and provide vegetative cover to control stormwater and prevent further soil erosion.
Speaking in Gombe, Fawu said the project, awarded to Messers Triacta Nig. Ltd, is an initiative of the Governor Yahaya-led administration to address environmental challenges that have long plagued the state, which is rated as the erosion capital of the North-East.
Gully erosion has ravaged the landscape and threatened livelihoods, but the Governor has taken decisive action. Fawu emphasised that the project is a significant step towards land reclamation, ecosystem restoration, and community revitalisation.
Furthermore, a 21 km gully erosion project from FCE(T) Gombe to Malam Inna, aimed at mitigating the effects of climate change, is almost completed.
Fawu urged stakeholders to cooperate in implementing people-oriented policies to safeguard and protect the environment.
