The Gombe State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists has appealed to stakeholders in Edo State to prioritise peace and democratic values ahead of the upcoming governorship election.
In a statement signed by its Chairman, Faruk Muazu, the union emphasised the importance of a violence-free electoral process, urging the electorate, political parties, security agencies, and the Independent National Electoral Commission to work together.
“The NUJ recognises the critical role that free, fair, and credible elections play in strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.
“We call on all stakeholders to adhere to the provisions of the Electoral Act and other relevant laws guiding the electoral process,” the statement partly read.
The union also advised journalists covering the election to report accurately, fairly, avoiding sensationalism and partisanship.
“We charge journalists to uphold ethical standards, fact-check information, and verify sources,” Muazu added. “Their safety and well-being should also be prioritised.”
The Gombe NUJ expressed solidarity with its colleagues in Edo State, commending their efforts in promoting democratic journalism.
