The working visit of Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, CON to Michigan State University (MSU) in the United States of America, has yielded significant commitments that paves the way for groundbreaking collaborations that will position Gombe State as a hub for agricultural innovation and development.
During the visit, two major developments were announced:
1. MSU to Establish Agricultural Innovation Hub in Gombe
One of the standout achievements from the visit is MSU’s commitment to establish an agricultural innovation hub in Gombe as part of its prestigious American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) Programme. Gombe will be one of only four locations in Africa where these hubs will be established.
This hub will serve as a cutting-edge centre for agricultural research, innovation, and technology transfer. The primary focus will be on advancing agricultural practices, boosting productivity, and addressing the unique challenges faced by smallholder farmers in Gombe State. Through the hub, MSU will introduce advanced mechanization, smart farming techniques, and climate-resilient crops, all tailored to the specific needs of Gombe’s agricultural sector.
2. Partnership for Establishment of College of Agriculture at Gombe State University ( GSU)
MSU expressed its willingness to partner with the Gombe State Government for the establishment of a College of Agriculture at the Gombe State University (GSU). This proposed college would serve as a centre of excellence for agricultural research and capacity building, with the aim of equipping students and professionals with the skills needed to drive innovation in the sector.
The collaboration between MSU and GSU will focus on integrating modern agricultural sciences, research capabilities, and practical training into the curriculum. The institution will also provide support in developing research programmes that will address local agricultural challenges, such as soil management, crop diversification, and sustainable farming practices.
The establishment of a College of Agriculture at Gombe State University will not only enhance the academic profile of our state but will also ensure that we have the human capital needed to sustain our agricultural transformation for years to come.
