The Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate, Olumide Akpata, is facing a significant blow to his campaign as more than 150 of his supporters, led by former Etsako Central Publicity Secretary, Hon. Paul Okhipo, have defected to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

The defectors have pledged their full support to the PDP governorship candidate, Asue Ighodalo, and his running mate, Osarodion Ogie.

The mass defection took place at the residence of Aare Frank Momoh, a prominent figure in Edo politics.

The group of former Labour Party members was warmly received by the Etsako Central Local Government Chairman, Hon. Solomon Obomighie, during a symbolic ceremony.

This move has further strengthened the PDP’s momentum ahead of the crucial September 21st election.

Speaking at the event, Hon. Paul Okhipo emphasized that their decision to join the PDP was driven by the solid manifesto of the Asue/Ogie ticket, which aligns with the aspirations of the people of Edo State. According to Okhipo, the vision and policies outlined by Ighodalo and Ogie offer real solutions to the challenges facing Edo, making it an easy choice for them to back the PDP.

Furthermore, the support and guidance they have received from key PDP leaders like Aare Frank Momoh and Chairman Solomon Obomighie played a pivotal role in their decision to switch allegiance.

“We believe in the PDP’s vision for Edo State,” said Okhipo. “The manifesto of Asue Ighodalo and Osarodion Ogie reflects the future we want for our people—one of progress, stability, and inclusivity. That is why we have decided to join hands with the PDP in ensuring their victory.”

Hon. Solomon Obomighie expressed his gratitude for the show of confidence in the PDP’s leadership, noting that the defection is a testament to the growing support for the party’s candidates. He assured the new members that their contributions would be vital in securing a resounding victory for the PDP in Etsako Central and the other 17 local government areas across the state.

“The people have spoken, and the choice is clear,” Obomighie said. “The PDP and its candidates represent the future of Edo State. With the support of committed individuals like Hon. Paul Okhipo and others, we are confident that come September 21st, Asue Ighodalo and Osarodion Ogie will be declared the winners of this election.”

Aare Frank Momoh, a respected elder statesman, welcomed the new supporters to the PDP, highlighting the importance of unity as the election approaches. He encouraged everyone to continue working diligently in mobilizing voters across the state to ensure that their voices are heard on election day.

With less than 48hrs to go before the election, the defection of such a significant number of Labour Party supporters is a considerable setback for Akpata’s campaign. The PDP, on the other hand, appears to be gaining ground, especially in the critical Etsako Central Local Government Area. Observers are predicting that this shift in loyalty could play a decisive role in the election’s outcome.

As the PDP’s campaign intensifies, the party is confident that the defection signals a broader trend of support for Asue Ighodalo and Osarodion Ogie, positioning them as the front-runners in the race for Edo State’s highest offices. With the backing of these influential local leaders and grassroots supporters, the PDP believes that victory is all but assured, not just in Etsako Central but in all 17 LGAs across the state.
