Dr Tukur Madu-Yemi, a senior lecturer at Federal University Kashere in Gombe, has called on the Federal Government to release detained children protesters.
“I appeal to your sense of justice and compassion, urging you to release these children immediately and without any conditions. They require understanding and guidance, not punishment, as they navigate the world around them,” Dr Madu-Yemi said.
The children, aged 10-18, were charged with treason for participating in a peaceful hunger protest, expressing frustration with conditions they believe are failing them. Madu-Yemi emphasised that these young Nigerians face harsh legal consequences typically reserved for adults with serious criminal intent, despite no harmful items or violent acts.
He pointed out that those seeking regional rights were given leniency and released, demonstrating a just and compassionate approach. “How, then, can we justify a harsher response to children who have committed no violence and who merely sought to be heard?” he asked.
The prolonged detention and prosecution of these children for peaceful protest not only raise ethical concerns but also risk drawing international criticism, impacting how Nigeria is viewed on the global stage. “Nigeria has long been known as the ‘Giant of Africa,’ a country rich in diversity, resilience, and spirit. Our nation’s reputation is defined by how we treat the most vulnerable among us, including our youth,” Madu-Yemi stated.
By responding with compassion and releasing these young Nigerians, the government would not only preserve the nation’s dignity but also reaffirm its commitment to democracy, human rights, and the importance of listening to its citizens. “Let us demonstrate to the world that Nigeria remains a beacon of hope, justice, and resilience for all its people,” he concluded.
I haven’t checked in here for a while since I thought it was getting boring, but the last several posts are good quality so I guess I will add you back to my everyday bloglist. You deserve it my friend :)
I was recommended this blog by my cousin. I’m not sure whether this post is written by him as nobody else know such detailed about my difficulty. You’re amazing! Thanks!
Throughout the grand pattern of things you actually get an A+ with regard to hard work. Where you misplaced me personally was first on all the facts. You know, people say, details make or break the argument.. And that could not be much more true here. Having said that, let me reveal to you just what did deliver the results. Your text is definitely quite powerful and this is probably the reason why I am taking an effort to opine. I do not really make it a regular habit of doing that. Secondly, despite the fact that I can notice a jumps in reasoning you make, I am definitely not convinced of exactly how you seem to connect the details that make the final result. For now I will, no doubt subscribe to your issue but wish in the foreseeable future you actually connect the facts much better.
It’s actually a great and useful piece of info. I am happy that you shared this helpful information with us. Please stay us informed like this. Thank you for sharing.
