The USAID State2State Activity Project has urged Adamawa officials and Civil Society Organisations to continue promoting accountability, transparency, and effectiveness in governance.

Suzanne Myada, the Adamawa State2State Team Lead, made this call during the quality assurance session for the 2023 Citizens Accountability Report in Yola on Thursday.

She noted that the project has only five years to improve service delivery, particularly in the education, health, and WASH sectors.

“The State2State project is a five-year initiative, and we are now closer to the end than the beginning, as we are already in the fifth year.

“The key point we need to emphasise is sustainability, ensuring that when we conclude our activities, those of you on the ground will continue the work we have supported you in doing.

“We expect that by now, you understand our goals and what you are supposed to do, so that no one needs to remind you of your responsibilities”.

Myada explained that the citizens’ budget is prepared at the beginning of the year, while the citizens’ accountability report is generated at the end to inform citizens of the government’s achievements.

Mr Allahdon Kenan, State2State’s Public Financial Management (PFM) specialist, said the strategic objectives of the intervention include reviewing and validating the 2023 Citizens’ Accountability Report.

“Specifically, we aim to increase access to and understanding of annual budget performance information for citizens and CSOs.

“We also aim to enhance transparency and accountability in budget implementation and service delivery in the state, and boost citizen and CSO participation in budget monitoring and implementation,” he said.

Mr Emmanuel Bwala, a citizen engagement and capacity-building consultant, urged CSOs to utilise the citizens’ accountability report for advocacy and sensitisation efforts to improve service delivery in priority sectors.

Godwin Agbragu, a participant, stated that they gained insights on how to effectively contribute as CSOs for advocacy and sensitisation aimed at promoting good governance in the state.
