The Chairman of the Balanga Local Government Council, Mal. Salisu Ibrahim, has announced plans for a significant revival of irrigation farming in the area after years of inactivity.

Speaking to our correspondent in Tallase, the council’s headquarters, Salisu revealed that the irrigation systems, which had been dormant for over four years due to neglect by the previous administration, are now being rehabilitated under the leadership of Governor Inuwa Yahaya of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He assured that his administration is committed to supporting local farmers to boost agricultural productivity and prevent economic stagnation. “We are determined to assist our farmers with critical inputs, financial support, and improved infrastructure,” he said.

Salisu also stated ongoing efforts to partner with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to provide additional resources and technical expertise. “Farmers in the region can anticipate a promising season,” he said.

He noted that the first quarter of 2025 is expected to yield positive results. “This initiative is focused on enhancing food security and ensuring farmers benefit from the rehabilitated irrigation system,” he added.

The Balanga Dam, constructed in the 1980s under the administration of Gen. Ibrahim Babangida (Rtd), has historically been vital to the community’s agricultural livelihood. However, its closure five years ago under the previous administration caused significant economic hardship in the area.

Alhaji Mohammed Adamu, Chairman of the Dry Season Farming Association in Balanga, has urged the government to accelerate the dam’s restoration. “We appeal to the authorities to act swiftly and provide relief to our farmers,” he emphasised.

He expressed optimism, stating, “With the ongoing efforts and renewed government focus, farmers in Balanga LGA have reason to look forward to a brighter and more productive future.”
