The National Youth Service Corps Scheme on Friday hailed the Gombe State Government for prioritising the welfare of corps members especially their feeding and housing during placements.
Speaking during the swearing in ceremony of 2024 batch C stream II corps members held at the temporary orientation camp in Amada Akko Local Government Area, state coordinator Chinwe Nwachuku, commended the government’s efforts.
Our correspondent reports that Chief Judge of Gombe State Halima Mohammed, represented by Justice Haruna Auwal, swore in a total of 1,783 corps members; comprising 928 males and 855 females.
Nwachuku said, “I would like also to express my deepest gratitude to the Executive Governor of Gombe state His Excellency Alhaji Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya CON (Dan Majen Gombe) for his continued support for the scheme in Gombe state through the augmentation of feeding during every orientation course.
“Your Excellency’s commitment to the development of Gombe state and the youth in particular is truly commendable. Your approach in maintaining peace and security in the state is topnotch which enables our Corps Members operate in a peaceful and secured environment.”
Continuing the state coordinator noted that the government’s 30-bedroom accommodation would go a long way in stabilising the corps members, “I wish to thank His Excellency for the 30-bedroom corpers lodge being built in pilot schools in Gombe state this I must say is a project next to none and accommodation problem will soon be a thing of the past for Corps Members posted to Gombe state and for completion of our permanent orientation camp soonest,” she added.
While extending the corps members gratitude Nwachuku urged other local government chairmen to emulate the Gombe LGA boss, by identifying with them while on camp to inspire hope among the youths adding, “I also wish to thank Chairman Gombe Local Government and ALGON Chairman (My brother) for his show of love towards Batch ‘C’ stream I Corps Member. I hope to see you again this stream. And to all Local Government chairmen who visited last camp I am most grateful I hope to see more of you this time. I seize this opportunity to invite all Local Government Chairmen to visit the camp and talk with this Corps Members with a view to letting them know first-hand, how hospitable your Local Government can be.”
While declaring the orientation course open, Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Yahaya, who was represented by Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development Inuwa Adamu, assured the 1,783 corps members of adequate security.
Yahaya said, “On behalf of the government and people of Gombe State, I congratulate you on completing your academic pursuits and successfully inducting into the National Youth Service Corps Scheme.
“As you settle into your new environment, I assure you of our commitment to your welfare, security, and general well-being. Gombe State is a safe haven, and we guarantee a conducive working environment for your activities and programmes during your service year.”
The governor further urged them to be committed saying “The orientation course is the first of the four cardinal programmes of the Scheme, designed to introduce you to the aims and objectives of the NYSC. I urge you to participate actively.”
