The Gombe Network of Civil Society has commended the state government’s proactive initiative to review and modernise outdated legal frameworks, particularly in the realm of criminal justice.
“We recognise that the current legislative environment is in need of urgent reform to align with contemporary realities and challenges,” said Ibrahim Yusuf, Chairman of GONET in a press statement obtained by PERISCOPE NIGERIA on Monday.
The state government’s review of obsolete laws, as exemplified by the Gombe State Administration of Criminal Justice (Amendment) Bill 2024, marks a significant step towards ensuring that the legal system is both effective and equitable.
“This amendment bill underscores the necessity of updating our statutes to better protect the rights of citizens and enhance the delivery of justice in our state,” Yusuf added.
GONET emphasized the importance of transparent, inclusive, and consultative reform, stating that it is essential for achieving sustainable improvements in the administration of criminal justice.
“We believe that such reforms will not only strengthen accountability and the rule of law but will also foster an environment in which civil society can contribute constructively to national dialogue,” Yusuf said.
GONET pledged to support the review process by encouraging broad-based stakeholder consultations, monitoring the implementation of any changes, and advocating for reforms that balance security concerns with the protection of human rights.
“We stand ready to work collaboratively with government bodies, legal practitioners, and the media to ensure that these reforms lead to a more just and responsive legal system,” Yusuf concluded.
