The Vice Chairperson of Nigerian Bar Association Gombe State Branch, Mwalin Abdu, is sounding the alarm on the need for urgent action to achieve gender equality, particularly in Gombe State.
She made this call in a press statement obtained by PERISCOPE NIGERIA to mark International Women’s Day 2025.
Our correspondent reports that theme of this year’s International Women’s Day, “Accelerate Action,” resonates deeply with Abdu’s call to action.

Abdu’s call to action PERISCOPE NIGERIA gathered is especially poignant, given the stark reality that, at our current pace, it will take approximately five generations to reach full gender parity.
The chairperson of Human Rights Committee of Gombe NBA, disclosed that her concerns are rooted in the systemic barriers and biases that women face in both personal and professional spheres.
The statement partly read, “The fact that women were not allowed to vote in a community in Gombe State during the 2023 general elections is a stark reminder of the work that remains to be done.
“Furthermore, the absence of women representatives in the Gombe State House of Assembly underscores the need for greater representation and empowerment of women.”
“As we approach the next general election, it is crucial that we unite in our commitment to recognise the challenges women face and actively engage in efforts that promote equality and empower women in all areas of life,” she added.
While harping on the need to prioritise the empowerment of women and girls, address the root causes of gender inequality, and promote inclusive decision-making processes, adding together the state can create a brighter future where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
“We must accelerate our efforts to dismantle the systemic barriers and biases that women face.We owe it to ourselves, our daughters, and our communities to create a future where gender parity is a reality, not just a distant goal,” the statement added.
