The Nigerian House of Representatives has passed a resolution instructing the Nigerian Communications Commission to block access to pornographic websites across the country with immediate effect.
This decision followed a motion presented by Dalhatu Tafoki, a lawmaker representing Faskari/Kankara/Sabuwa Federal Constituency in Katsina State, during a plenary session on Tuesday.
Mr. Tafoki expressed concern over the unrestricted access to pornographic materials in the country, highlighting their detrimental impact on the erosion of societal values, especially among young Nigerians.
Citing psychological studies that warn about the harmful effects of consuming pornographic and obscene content, Mr. Tafoki stated, “Renowned psychologists and sociologists worldwide have issued strong warnings about the psychological, sociological, and mental consequences of consuming pornographic content.”
The motion received support from other lawmakers, who emphasized the urgent need to protect Nigeria’s rich social and moral values.
If implemented, the directive would significantly affect many young Nigerians who rely on platforms like OnlyFans, Pornhub, XVideos, and Allaccess for income through heavy followership and monthly subscription renewals.
The move also signals a potential disruption to the earnings of Nigerians who have built careers by leveraging these adult platforms.
