The Managing Director, Society for Family Health, Dr Omokhudu Idogha, says poetry  is an instrument of change that must be taken seriously for a better society.

Idogha said this on Saturday in Jalingo, when he joined secondary school students to celebrate the 2025 world poetry day with a poetry recitation competition among schools.

Represented by Aisha Dadi, the MD noted that this year’s celebration with the team ‘Poetry as a bridge for peace and inclusion’, emphasises the power of words in fostering unity, harmony and peace in the society.

“This remarkable occasion is a day that reminds us of the beauty, power, and significance of poetry in shaping minds and societies.

“Poetry is more than just words; it is a voice for the unheard, a tool for change, and a bridge that connects hearts and minds across cultures, backgrounds, and experiences.

“This year’s theme, speaks to the power of words in fostering unity, harmony, and understanding in our communities.

“It is another step in nurturing talents, encouraging dialogue, and fostering a culture of peace and inclusivity.

“To all the young poets gathered here today, I urge you to continue to write, speak and  challenge the status quo.

“Your poems today are not just for competition; they are voices that can influence policies, inspire movements, and bring about the change our society needs,” he said.

Alhaji Idris Goje, Permanent Secretary, Taraba Ministry of Education, said Poetry has always been a mirror to society, reflecting the joy, sorrows, struggles, and triumphs.

“In alignment with the transformative power of poetry, we recognize the pivotal role of education in shaping the health and well-being of our communities,” he said.

Goje charged the students to write poems on  topics such as early pregnancies, child marriages, school dropouts, HIV prevention, and gender-based violence.

He commended the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and SFH for their  support for the event and  educational development in the state at large.

PERISCOPE NIGERIA reports that Winners Comprehensive Secondary School, Jalingo emerged top of the competition.
