The National President, Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, Comrade Muhammad Haruna, has decried that roads linking the North-East region of Nigeria, especially Taraba were worse than those in South Sudan
Haruna made the claim while speaking at the 11th, SSANU National Zonal Executive meeting, held on Tuesday in Jalingo.
According to him, the North-East states were being neglected by the federal government in terms of infrastructure, security and human development.
He called on the Federal Government to shift her attention to the North-East states to also feel her infrastructural impact.
“Roads linking Taraba from anywhere are worse than those in south Sudan. Taraba, among other northeast states are not been fairly treated. The federal government has neglected the northeast, and the politicization of security in the region is pathetic.
“I do not know why roads linking the North-East region can not be like those in Lagos, Kano Ibadan Kaduna and others. Apart from Benue, I don’t think there is any state in Nigeria that produce food that feed the entire country like Taraba. I think the federal government has no justification to neglect the northeast, particularly Taraba in terms of infrastructure. Taraba is backwards, even though, the state government is trying.
“I wish to call on the federal Government to improve the security state in the Northeast. The politicisation of security in the region is pathetic to say the least.
“There should be effective policing in the region, not the security men to be on the checkpoints and keep collecting money from the less privilege. They should be deploy with a strict order to defend Nigerians without being political in their operations, and stop being VIP assistance to wifes of politicians
“The North-East region has been the most peaceful region in Nigeria until recently, when Boko-Haram came in company with political insecurity.
“Without being political, i support the call for self defence. We should all defend ourselves against those who do not want us to be at peace. We can not continue to seat and wait for our killers to come and kill us. We should defend ourselves in accordance with the Constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria,” the SSANU National President decried.
