The African Centre for Development Journalism has paid tribute to its late Executive Director and Editor-in-Chief, Rotimi Sankore, describing him as a champion of truth, justice and human dignity.
PERISCOPE NIGERIA reports that Sankore’s passing was marked on April 12, 2025, with the ACDJ reflecting on his legacy and reaffirming its commitment to the values he embodied.
“Rotimi was more than a journalist,” the ACDJ statement signed by Deji Dosunmu reads. “He fiercely advocated for democratic accountability, human rights, gender equality, and public health across the African continent.”
Under Sankore’s leadership, the ACDJ made significant strides in elevating development journalism in Africa. His commitment to evidence-based reporting and telling the stories of marginalized communities earned him admiration across sectors and borders.
“Rotimi believed in journalism as a force for good, not just to inform but to empower,” the statement noted. “He carried this belief with integrity, passion, and an unwavering resolve.”
The ACDJ highlighted Sankore’s instrumental role in shaping narratives on critical issues such as maternal health, migration, freedom of expression and the rights of vulnerable communities. His legacy continues to inspire courage, action and transformation, the organization said.
“As we reflect on his life, we are reminded of his principles and drive to entrench an equal society,” the statement added. “In his memory, we reaffirm our commitment to the values he lived by, which include speaking truth to power, holding institutions accountable, and telling the stories that too often go unheard.”
The statement added that Sankore’s dedication to advancing data-driven journalism and policy advocacy has left a lasting impact, particularly in promoting the rights of women and socially excluded groups.
