The Gwandum community has celebrated its 9th Gwandum Nakka Cultural Festival with the theme ‘Stronger Together: Building a Thriving Community through Unity and Action.’
Declaring the event open, Alhaji Yahaya Haruna Ayuba (JP), Hakimin Gwandum, appreciated all attendees for joining the people of Gwandum in celebrating their rich cultural heritage.
He expressed deep gratitude to the Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, for ensuring peace and security in the area.
“A few years ago, our community faced numerous attacks and kidnappings around the Taraba-Gombe-Bauchi border axis. Today, through government intervention, Gwandum is peaceful and thriving,” the monarch said.
He also acknowledged Hon. Fatima Binta Bello, Chairperson of Shongom Local Government, for her unwavering support in organising the event, as well as other dignitaries whose contributions made the festival a success.
Delivering the keynote address, Dr Napoleon D. Usman, HOD, Department of Building Technology, Gombe State University, commended the resilience and uniqueness of the Gwandum people.
He urged them to engage more in community development, collaborate across social classes, and invest in youth empowerment.
Usman praised community leaders like Hon. Samuel Markus Wina for sponsoring educational and vocational training programs for young people and encouraged others to follow suit.
He also emphasised the importance of preserving Gwandum’s cultural heritage and passing it on to the younger generation.
Notable dignitaries at the event included Bala Bello Tinka, Chairman of the Occasion; Senator Anthony Siyako Yaro, represented by Bldr. Samuel Markus Wina, SLA to the Deputy Senate President.
Others are Executive Chairpersons of Shongom, Kaltungo, Billiri, and Balanga. The Mai Kaltungo, the Sarkin Wurkun of Bauchi, and other traditional rulers; The member representing Pero-Chonge Constituency, Barrister Gaius Golkos and heads of various security agencies in the region.
The festival featured traditional performances, cultural exhibitions, and a renewed commitment to community unity and progress.
