Displaced members of Munga Lalau and Munga Doso communities in Karim Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State have expressed deep disappointment over Governor Agbu Kefas’s decision to ignore the mass burial of more than 30 people killed by suspected herdsmen on Friday night.
The grieving residents described the governor’s action as inhumane, stating that a true leader should demonstrate empathy during such a tragic loss of human lives.
According to the Nigerian Tribune, Governor Agbu Kefas reportedly left Taraba State at the same time the communities were preparing to conduct the mass burial.
“This is inhuman of Governor Kefas. Imagine—over 30 people have been killed and the governor didn’t care to visit. Instead, he left the state just as we were preparing to bury our dead,” lamented Elder Ayuba Nbuyu, a community leader.
Mr. Solomon Dashu and Mr. Kasu-Mai Abu, members of the community vigilante group, also expressed concern over the governor’s absence, calling it a clear sign that he does not value human life.
“It’s unfortunate that Governor Agbu Kefas has shown such disregard for the sanctity of life. Over 30 people were killed, yet he didn’t even come to witness the tragedy for himself. Today, as we conduct a mass burial, he has jetted out of the state,” said Mr. Dashu.
“Yes, he has been traveling frequently, but we believe that in a time like this, the governor should show empathy and act like a responsible leader,” added Mr. Abu.
“We are surprised that this same governor, who asked us to return to our communities after we fled attacks two weeks ago and promised us protection, is now nowhere to be found. We urge the governor to be sensitive to matters involving human lives, return to Taraba, visit the Munga communities, and provide adequate security to prevent further senseless killings,” they said.
Our correspondent reports that, according to local sources, over 50 corpses have been recovered so far, with many people still missing.
