One of his most notable legacies was the sponsorship of numerous Nigerian youths to study maritime-related courses both at home and abroad. Recognizing the strategic importance of the maritime industry to national development and economic diversification, Senator Umar invested in human capital by creating opportunities for young Nigerians to acquire specialised knowledge and skills in the field.

Under his leadership, the Ministry of Transportation through agencies such as the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), initiated scholarship programs that enabled qualified students to pursue studies in marine engineering, nautical science, naval architecture, and related disciplines in renowned maritime institutions overseas. These programs were aimed at bridging the gap in local expertise, ensuring Nigeria could build a competent workforce to drive growth in shipping, seafaring, port operations, and maritime law.

Senator Umar’s efforts not only opened doors for individual success but also strengthened the foundation of Nigeria’s maritime industry. Many beneficiaries of the scholarships have since returned to contribute meaningfully to the sector, working in private and public maritime agencies, or establishing careers in international shipping companies.

Beyond maritime education, Senator Umar has consistently prioritized youth empowerment. Throughout his public service career as a two-term Member of the House of Representatives, Senator representing Gombe Central, and Federal Minister he has facilitated employment opportunities and championed developmental projects across Yamaltu Deba and the wider Gombe State.

Senator Idris A. Umar’s vision and actions have left a lasting impact, earning him respect as a leader who truly invested in the future of Nigerian youth. His legacy continues to inspire a new generation of leaders and professionals who are charting a course for national progress through skill, service, and dedication.
