The Centre for the Study and Resolution of Domestic Violence, in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund on Wednesday organised a two-day stakeholders’ sensitisation workshop in Gombe State to address pressing gender issues.

Held at the Gombe State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, the event focused on sexual and reproductive health and rights, gender-based violence, child marriage, and gender equality.

The workshop brought together stakeholders from various sectors including civil society, traditional institutions, and government agencies, all united in their resolve to end gender-based violence and promote gender equality in Gombe State.

In her opening remarks, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development,  Asma’u Iganus, reiterated the commitment of the Muhammadu Yahaya-led administration to the protection and advancement of women’s rights in the state.

“We are committed to working with partners to eradicate gender-based violence and uplift the status of women across Gombe State. I call on all NGOs operating in the state to collaborate with the ministry to ensure their programmes align with our policies and deliver maximum impact,” she added.

During the workshop, A Professor of Criminology and Gender Studies, Hauwau Yusuf, harped the need for stronger grassroots involvement in gender advocacy.

Yusuf who doubles as Executive Director CERSDOV called for concerted efforts towards tackling gbv.

“Traditional leaders—village heads, district heads, and emirs—are key agents of change. Their involvement in sensitization campaigns will deepen the reach and effectiveness of our messages, especially in rural communities,” Prof. Yusuf stated.

On her part, Director  National Orientation Agency in Gombe, Adaline Waye, commended UNFPA for its ongoing support to vulnerable groups.

She said, “UNFPA has shown consistency in its efforts to protect the rights and lives of women and girls.

“We encourage the agency to continue in this direction to ensure sustained impact.”
