As Nigeria marks the 26th anniversary of uninterrupted democratic governance, the Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Gombe Branch, Benjamin Sati, has called for urgent reforms in the state’s judiciary and a renewed commitment to peace, justice, and democratic values.

In a speech commemorating both Nigeria’s Democracy Day and the 26th anniversary of Gombe State’s civilian administration, Sati described the occasion as a “reminder of the long and painful journey” toward freedom, adding that it was bought with the “sweat, blood, and suffering of millions.”

“Those fallen heroes, those forgotten fighters who gave their lives, liberty, and safety for our collective freedom must not be forgotten,” Sati said. “Their sacrifices must be remembered and honoured, not just in words but in action.”

He proposed that the Gombe State Government consider naming or renaming streets, institutions, and public places after unsung democratic heroes from the state who have not yet been immortalised.

“If our children are to understand the cost of our democracy, we must ensure they also know the names of those who made it possible — not just the famous ones, but the everyday people who stood up for justice,” he stated.

Kalare Boys and the Security Threat

While applauding the resilience of the Nigerian people and the progress recorded so far, Sati expressed concern over growing security challenges in Gombe, particularly the menace of violent gangs locally referred to as Kalare boys. He described their activities — which include robbery, assault, and in some cases murder — as “a direct threat to the peace and freedom democracy is meant to guarantee.”

“Our people continue to expect sustained freedom, peace, security, unity, and prosperity. But these expectations are being threatened by the unchecked actions of criminal elements,” he said.

He, however, commended the Gombe State Commissioner of Police and the State Government for their “swift and coordinated response” to the situation.

“The Bar stands ready to support all efforts to prosecute and jail those found guilty. Together, we must reclaim our communities from violence and gangsterism.”

Funding the Judiciary and Reopening the Court of Appeal

Turning his attention to the judicial sector, Sati reiterated the NBA’s long-standing call for improved funding for the judiciary in Gombe State. He acknowledged the construction of a new High Court complex but stressed that operational costs and support for judicial personnel must also be prioritised.

“There is no better time than now to adequately fund the judiciary,” he said. “The delays in justice delivery are largely the result of underfunding, and if democracy is to thrive, the judiciary must function efficiently and independently.”

He also criticised the recent closure of the Gombe Division of the Court of Appeal, describing the transfer of all appeal cases to Maiduguri as unjustified and dangerous, especially given the security situation in Borno State.

“The relocation of appeal hearings to Maiduguri, in the face of a Boko Haram resurgence, is both illogical and unsafe. The State Government must intervene and engage with federal authorities to restore this critical infrastructure.”

Democracy Is a Collective Responsibility

Sati concluded his address by urging all citizens to take ownership of the democratic process and avoid placing the burden of development solely on the executive arm of government.

“Rome wasn’t built in a day,” he said. “The development of our state and country is a collective duty. The executive, legislature, judiciary, civil society, and indeed every citizen must contribute.”

He expressed gratitude for the progress made over the last 26 years and called for unity and patience in the face of ongoing challenges.

“We thank the Almighty God for giving us the privilege to witness this day in peace and unity. May we continue to move forward as one people under a just and democratic system.”
