The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, a public holiday to honour the memory and legacy of former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, who passed away on Sunday in London at the age of 83 after a prolonged illness.
The announcement was made on Monday evening by the Minister of Interior, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, during a press briefing at the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja.
Tunji-Ojo said the day would serve as a national day of remembrance for the late Nigerian leader, who first served as Head of State from 1983 to 1985, and later as a democratically elected President between 2015 and 2023.
He described the former president as a statesman who dedicated his life to the service of the nation and left a lasting imprint on Nigeria’s political and security landscape.
Buhari died on July 13 at a hospital in London, where he had been receiving treatment.
