The deceased, ASP Clement Yunana, aged 50, was reportedly knocked down by an unidentified vehicle while attempting to cross the road at about 5:00 pm. The vehicle, according to police sources, was heading towards Gombe metropolis from the Bauchi Road axis and did not stop to assist the victim after the collision.

Confirming the incident in a press statement on Friday, the Public Relations Officer DSP Buhari Abdullahi, described the event as “tragic and regrettable,” noting that efforts are currently underway to identify and apprehend the fleeing driver.

Abdullahi said, “The Command received with deep sorrow the report of the fatal hit-and-run involving one of our own.

“ASP Clement Yunana was a dedicated officer attached to the Railway Police Outstation in Bajoga Division. He sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe, where he was unfortunately pronounced dead.”

Abdullahi said a full-scale investigation has been launched into the incident and called on members of the public to come forward with any useful information that could aid in tracking down the vehicle and driver responsible.

“This is not just a tragic loss to the police force but also to the community he served with dedication. We are appealing to eyewitnesses or anyone with relevant information to assist us in ensuring justice is served,” he added.

The statement disclosed that Commissioner of Police, Gombe State Command, Bello Yahaya also extended condolences to the family and colleagues of the late officer, describing ASP Yunana as a committed and selfless officer whose contributions to national service will be remembered.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this difficult time. We assure the public that every effort is being made to bring the culprit to book,” he added.

As of press time, no arrests have been made, but police authorities say surveillance in the area has been intensified.
