The Gombe State chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association on Friday outrightly rejected a recent circular issued by the National Salaries, Income and Wages Commission reviewing allowances for Medical and Dental Officers in the Federal Public Service, describing it as unjust, demoralising, and a violation of previously agreed terms.

The decision was reached during an emergency virtual general meeting of the association held on Monday, July 14, 2025, convened to address the implications of the June 27 circular with reference number SWC/S/04/S.218/111/648.

According to the association, the circular undermines the welfare of doctors and breaches existing Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs) reached with the Federal Government. The association warned that such actions could further exacerbate the ongoing brain drain crisis in Nigeria’s health sector.

This was contained in a communique signed by Dr Ahmad Adamu-Girbo, Chairman of the NMA Gombe State Branch and Dr Lembi Samuel, Secretary which was obtained by our correspondent on Friday.

“This circular is a blatant disregard for the sacrifices of doctors who have remained in this country, working under some of the most difficult and under-resourced conditions.

“It is demoralising and shows a lack of appreciation for the value medical professionals bring to the public service,” the communique partly read.

The association affirmed that the Gombe NMA fully supports the 21-day ultimatum earlier issued by the national body to the Federal Government, noting that the NMA at both national and state levels would not hesitate to embark on lawful actions to ensure their demands are met.

“We are aligned with the national leadership and will comply with any steps deemed necessary to protect the dignity and rights of our members,” the communique added.

The association also used the platform to urge the Gombe State Government to act swiftly on the local implementation of the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS), highlighting that two previous reviews have yet to be implemented in the state even as a fresh 2025 review is under consideration at the federal level.

The association also lamented the widening disparity between federal and state health workers’ earnings. “The failure to implement past CONMESS reviews is creating a dangerous pay gap between federal and state institutions, which is fueling internal brain drain as our best hands seek better opportunities elsewhere,” it noted.

The association commended the National Officers’ Committee led by Prof. Bala Audu for its prompt intervention and firm stand against the circular.

While urging for unity the Gombe NMA called for unity among its members, assuring them of continued advocacy until justice is achieved, reiterating its commitment to defending the interests of its members. The communique concluded, “We are resolute in our mission to restore the dignity, nobility, and rightful entitlements of medical professionals in this country.”
