As we move towards a more progressive and inclusive society, the role of women in politics has become increasingly crucial. Gone are the days when politics was a male-dominated field, with women relegated to the sidelines. Today, we see women stepping up to take charge, paving the way for meaningful change and shaping society for the better.
Historically, women have faced numerous challenges and barriers in the political arena. From limited access to education and discrimination in the workplace, to societal expectations and gender stereotypes, women have had to overcome formidable obstacles to make their voices heard in the realm of politics. However, despite these challenges, women have persisted and risen to positions of power, breaking glass ceilings and challenging the status quo.
One of the most significant ways in which women are driving change and shaping society through politics is by addressing issues that have long been overlooked or ignored. Women bring a unique perspective to the table, one that is often rooted in their lived experiences and the struggles they face. This enables them to identify and prioritize issues such as gender equality, reproductive rights, and access to healthcare that directly impact women and families. By championing these causes, women are not only driving change for themselves, but for society as a whole.
In March, 2024, the European Union Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Samuela Isopi, has stated that the active participation of women in decision-making and politics remains important if Nigeria is to achieve equality, sustainable development, peace, and democracy.
She noted that while women have the fundamental right to participate in political life, most of them still face a lot of social, cultural, and financial challenges.
She, therefore, reminded stakeholders, especially the National Assembly, that the ongoing constitution reform process presents Nigeria with a unique opportunity to join the league of progressive nations in promoting gender parity through the adoption of a legal framework that discourages discrimination based on gender.
Moreover, women in politics are also breaking the mold and changing the outdated image of what a leader should look like. Through their leadership, they are challenging traditional notions of power and showing that women are just as capable and competent as men in positions of authority. This not only opens up opportunities for more women to enter politics but also sends a powerful message to young girls and women everywhere that they too can aspire to leadership roles.
Over the years, strategies to increase women’s participation in politics have been advanced through conventions, protocols, and international agreements for gender mainstreaming. However, they are yet to prove effective in achieving gender parity in the highest government rankings.
Thus, women continue to be underrepresented in government, and face barriers that often make it difficult for them to access, exercise political power, and assume leadership positions.
Another way in which women in politics are shaping society is by promoting diversity and representation. With their growing presence in politics, women are bringing a diversity of backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives to policymaking. This leads to more inclusive and well-rounded decision-making, ultimately benefiting all members of society. Moreover, the visibility of women in politics sends a powerful message of representation to underrepresented groups, inspiring them to also become involved in the political process.
In Nigeria, the advocacy for women’s political participation has been long drawn, and in spite of the very dynamic interventions by women groups and other key stakeholders, their representation remains in steady decline. For example, women’s representation in the 10th National Assembly is 7.4 percent out of a total of 469 combined seats in the Senate and House of Representatives.
It is worth noting that women in politics are not just driving change and shaping society at a national level. They are also making a significant impact at the community level. Many women are actively involved in grassroots movements, advocating for issues that directly affect their communities. This bottom-up approach to politics is crucial in bringing about meaningful change that benefits those who are often overlooked or marginalised.
The role of women in politics cannot be understated. They are leading the charge towards a more just, equitable, and inclusive society. By addressing important issues, breaking stereotypes, promoting diversity, and inspiring others, women are driving change and shaping society for the better. As we continue to strive towards progress, let us recognize and celebrate the crucial role of women in politics.
