The Academic Staff Union of Universities Federal University Wukari, Taraba State, on Wednesday staged a protest over what it described as the continued neglect by the Federal Government and failure to meet their welfare agreements.
Professor Mercy Asabe, the ASUU chairperson, alleged during the protest in Wukari that the Federal Government has consistently failed to implement long-standing agreements with the union, thereby neglecting the welfare of its members and testing their patience.
She insisted that the newly introduced Tertiary Institution Staff Support Fund loan scheme was unacceptable, arguing that lecturers deserve improved salaries and welfare packages, not loans.
“We wish to state here that the newly introduced Tertiary Institution Staff Support Fund loan scheme is unacceptable, and stands rejected.
We want the Federal Government to implement the already signed agreements to improve lecturers’ salaries and welfare, not loans.
We demand the immediate payment of the Union’s Earned Academic Allowances (EAA). The ₦50 billion that was recently released is not up to 10 percent of the amount owed. We want our revitalization funds restored, lecturers’ salaries improved, and their welfare given priority,” she said.
Also speaking, Prof. Kidzu Oweh, a former ASUU Chairman of the university, condemned the poor remuneration of lecturers, describing the situation as a total neglect of university teachers.
