The Deputy Governor of Gombe State, Dr Manassah Jatau, on Saturday commissioned 114 revitalised Primary Health Care facilities across the state, declaring the exercise a major step toward universal health coverage.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony held at Akko PHC, Dr Jatau said the Governor Muhammadu Yahaya-led administration has made health a top priority since assuming office in 2019.
“Health is too important to be delayed in reporting and responding. There must be no time to waste or wait on any health challenge,” the deputy governor said.
He noted that the state has increased its health budgetary allocation from 3.5 percent in 2019 to 15 percent in 2025, in line with the Abuja Declaration, while also strengthening institutions to improve service delivery.
“Through the Gombe Contributory Health Agency, over 300,000 beneficiaries now have access to healthcare. Our Drug Management Agency has ensured essential commodities are available across facilities, reducing stock-outs and improving quality of care,” Jatau explained.
He further disclosed that the state, with support from the World Bank’s IMPACT project, has so far revitalized 103 Primary Health Centres and 66 Health Clinics, equipping them with solar power, water supply, medical equipment, and staff accommodation.
Calling for sustainability, Jatau urged communities to take ownership of the facilities.
“It is essential that our communities maintain and utilise these facilities effectively. We must work together to ensure they serve our citizens for years to come,” he said.
He acknowledged the contributions of civil society organisations, traditional and religious leaders, local government chairmen, and the World Bank technical team, led by Dr Oniorede, for their support in implementing the projects.
“Based on these laudable performances, Gombe State has received awards from national and international organisations. But as it is not yet uhuru, we must improve our work attitude and ethics in rendering this important assignment for humanity,” he added.
