In furtherance of its statutory responsibility of providing succour to people in dire strait, the North East Development Commission has distributed food and non-food items worth millions of naira to victims of flood disaster in some parts of Dukku Local Government Area of Gombe state.
Items distributed include 600 25kg bags of rice, 300 cartoon of spaghetti, 150 galloon of vegetable oil, 200 50kg bags of sugar, 300 pieces of blankets and 300 pieces of mats.
Presenting the items to Dukku Local Government Area, head of NEDC Gombe Operational Office Rufai Manu explained that the relief would not have been possible without synergy existing between the NEDC and the Gombe State Emergency Management Agency SEMA.
Lawan Baba Manu remarked that, the relief materials presented to the victims of the flood disaster is not compensatory but a modest gesture from the commission and by extension the Federal Government to address their immediate needs.
While empathising with the victims of the flood disaster, Manu assured the Commission’s readiness to advance the welfare and wellbeing of the people.
Also speaking, Executive Secretary of the Gombe State Emergency Management Agency, Abdullahi Haruna Abdullahi, said the presentation of the relief materials to the flood victims in some parts of Dukku Local Government Area follows a plea for help sent by his Agency.
He noted that the swift reaction by the NEDC to plight of the flood victims is a tastament of the Commission’s proactiveness and the cordial relationship existing between SEMA and NEDC.
The Gombe State Executive Secretary of SEMA explained that the statistics of households and individuals affected by the flood were properly compiled through the help of input from village, district head as well as the local emergency management committee of the Dukku Local Government council.
Abdullahi Haruna Abdullahi added that the administration of Governor Inuwa Yahaya will continue to prioritize the welfare of the people through partnership that are beneficial to the growth and development of the State.
Responding to the gesture, the chairman of Dukku Local Government Area Adamu Mohammed Waziri expressed gratitude to the NEDC and SEMA for coming to the aid of the flood victims.
He noted that the items presented will go a long way in addressing the immediate needs of those affected by the flood disaster, stressing that the Local Government Council stands in solidarity with the Commission.
While assuring the commission of a judicious distribution of the items, the chairman of Dukku Local Government Area used the occasion to thank Governor Mohammadu Inuwa Yahaya for his transformational leadership and magnanimity to his council.
