The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) has commended Gombe State for exceeding the 15 percent budgetary allocation to health, as recommended by the Abuja Declaration.

Speaking during a courtesy visit to Governor Muhammadu Yahaya at the Government House on Wednesday, the UNAIDS delegation, led by Dr Olaifa Yewande, praised the state for recording significant gains in the fight against HIV, Tuberculosis, and Malaria.
“Gombe has achieved a 95 percent reduction in HIV, TB, and Malaria cases, and more importantly, the State has gone beyond the 15 percent health sector funding benchmark. This is an outstanding example of political will that should be emulated by others,” Dr Yewande stated.
Governor Yahaya, represented by the Secretary to the Government of Gombe State, Professor Ibrahim Njodi, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to sustaining reforms in the health sector.
He added, “Our sustainability plan was designed to serve as a stopgap in case of a sudden exit of international donor agencies such as USAID.“We will not roll back our sleeves until the battle against HIV, TB, and Malaria is won in the interest of our people.”
Yahaya highlighted some of his administration’s interventions, including the construction and remodeling of 114 healthcare centers across the State’s wards, ongoing phase two of the project, and the introduction of the Gombe State Contributory Health Programme (GoHealth).
The governor added, “GoHealth is our way of guaranteeing affordable and accessible health services. It is part of our resolve to ensure no one is left behind.”
Other dignitaries present at the meeting included the Chairman, House Committee on Health, the State Commissioner for Health, and key stakeholders in the sector.
