The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Taraba State Chapter, has called on Nigerians to unite as one people beyond ethnic and religious differences.

Rev. Fr. Williams Awoshiri, the Taraba State CAN Chairman, made the call in a message to felicitate with Nigerians on the country’s 65th Independence anniversary.
He urged political leaders to view their service as a sacred trust and to deliver governance that uplifts every citizen, regardless of religion, tribe, or political affiliation.
“As we join millions of compatriots at home and abroad to give thanks to God for the journey so far, we call on citizens to prioritise peace among ethnic groups as one united people of Nigeria. We also urge leaders to see their service as a sacred trust, and to deliver governance that uplifts every citizen, regardless of religion, tribe, or political affiliation,” Awoshiri said.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s journey since independence, he noted that while the nation has faced trials, it has also shown resilience and faith.
“Sixty-five years after independence, our nation has faced trials, but we have also demonstrated resilience and faith. This anniversary is not only a moment of celebration but also of sober reflection and renewed commitment to the ideals of unity, justice, peace, and good governance,” he stated.
The CAN chairman encouraged Nigerians to continue praying and working for peace and prosperity, quoting Scripture:
“As the Scriptures remind us, ‘Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people He chose for His inheritance’ (Psalm 33:12). It is only by anchoring our nation on godly values that Nigeria can truly rise to fulfill her destiny as a beacon of hope for Africa and the world.”
He prayed for wisdom and courage for Nigeria’s leaders.
“We pray that Almighty God will grant our leaders wisdom, courage, and the fear of God to make decisions that will move Nigeria forward. May the labours of our heroes past not be in vain,” he added.
