The New Nigeria Movers (NNM) have warned against the dangers of tribalism and sectionalism in the country, describing them as major obstacles to Nigeria’s unity, economic growth, and political stability.
In a statement signed by the group’s president, Comrade Elder Samuel Olaleye, and made available to journalists on Wednesday, the NNM said tribalism and sectionalism have “ruined our economy and destroyed our body politics and brotherhood.”
According to the statement, “As we seek for a glorious new Nigeria of our dream, it is easy to be carried away by the allure of tribalism or sectionalism. Superficially, they may appear good or normal, but inwardly lies bitterness and hindrances. Like a poisonous apple, tribalism and sectionalism have ruined our economy and destroyed our sense of unity.”
The group likened tribalism to a parasite that kills fruitfulness and progress.
> “Just as a parasite creeps into a planted cocoa or kolanut tree and destroys its usefulness, tribalism and sectionalism have destroyed the unity, peace, harmony, love and progress of our great country,” the statement added.
The NNM criticized governments that encourage favoritism in public institutions.
> “Any government that celebrates and glorifies tribalism or sectionalism in the appointment and promotion of officers, employment of workers, and admission of students needs urgent reorientation, anchored by a new political order,” Olaleye said.
The group further warned of the grave consequences if tribalism continues unchecked.
> “By ignoring the dangers, we risk pushing our country towards secession, crimes, insurgency, terrorism, poverty, corruption, insincerity, and lack of accountability,” the statement read. “But by heeding the warning, we can protect and preserve our democracy, our sovereignty, and build a safer society where Nigerians can live, work and study anywhere without molestation or restrictions.”
Calling for a new national consciousness, the NNM urged Nigerians to reflect on their choices and work towards unity.
> “As a nation and people, let us be committed to a new Nigeria that eliminates tribalism and sectionalism. Let us build institutions that promote peace, harmony, love, and progress,” Olaleye said.
The group also cautioned against external influences undermining Nigeria’s development.
> “We must be vigilant and discerning, guarding ourselves against nations who want to undermine our growth. Instead, we should choose the path of self-sufficiency and self-sustaining economy,” the statement concluded.
“May God Almighty continue to bless our country,” Olaleye prayed.
