The Catholic Bishop of Jalingo Diocese, Most Rev. Charles Hamawa, has lamented that successive administrations have failed to develop Taraba, leaving it among the poorest states in Nigeria in terms of infrastructure and governance.
The Bishop made the remarks while addressing journalists shortly after the Independence Anniversary Thanksgiving and the Inauguration Service of the newly elected officials of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Taraba State Chapter, in Jalingo.
Hamawa expressed concern that transformational ideas and developmental projects had been neglected by the political class, to the detriment of future generations.
“I am afraid, but I must confess here that development in Taraba State is very poor,” he said.
“Successive administrations have failed to develop the state. The political class needs to step up and build a Taraba that generations yet unborn will be proud of and ride on.”
While congratulating Nigerians on the country’s 65th Independence Anniversary, the Bishop urged leaders to utilize the abundant resources available in the country to build a nation that would not only be the giant of Africa but a global force.
He also appealed to citizens to embrace peace and unity across ethnic divides to foster the development the country urgently needs.
“Though we have made some impactful progress within 65 years, our leaders need to step up. We have everything in Nigeria; they should use the available resources to make Nigeria the giant of the world,” he added.
