Taraba State Governor, Dr Agbu Kefas, has suspended his earlier scheduled defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) following the kidnapping of schoolgirls in Kebbi State.
Governor Kefas, who announced the decision on Tuesday in Jalingo, explained that “humanity comes first before politics.” He said a new date for the defection rally would be announced after security operatives succeed in rescuing the abducted schoolgirls.
PERISCOPE NIGERIA reports that 16 members of the Taraba State House of Assembly, led by the Speaker, Hon. John Kizito Bonzena, resigned their membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday to join the APC.
The paper also reports that Alhaji Abubakar Bawa resigned his position as Taraba State PDP chairman to join the APC, alongside all commissioners and the newly elected 16 LGA council chairmen.
Governor Kefas had earlier stated that his decision to join the APC was aimed at attracting more development to Taraba State and supporting President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda.
He said, “In light of the deeply troubling situation involving the kidnapping of innocent schoolgirls in Kebbi State, I have taken the solemn decision to postpone my scheduled movement to the APC on Wednesday, 19th November 2025.
At a moment when our nation is once again confronted with the painful reality of insecurity, solidarity and compassion must rise above politics.
The safety of our children—the most vulnerable and precious members of our society—is far more important than any political activity or ceremony.
Today, my heart is with the families of the abducted children, the government and people of Kebbi State, and every Nigerian who feels the weight of this tragic incident, especially President Bola Tinubu.
As a governor who has promised security, education, and the protection of the vulnerable, I believe it is morally right and nationally responsible to suspend all political events until the situation receives the urgent attention it deserves.”
Governor Kefas also called on security operatives to intensify efforts toward ensuring the safe return of the schoolgirls.
