The Borno State Police Command has averted a potential explosion in Maiduguri following the recovery of an unexploded ordnance (UXO) discovered beneath a telecommunications mast in the Federal Low Cost area of the state capital.
The incident occurred on Monday, December 15, 2025, when operatives attached to the ITE Police Division received a distress report at about 11:06 a.m. over a suspected explosive device planted at Chuskon, within the Federal Low Cost area.
Confirming the development, the Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Abdulmajid, psc, said the timely response of the Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal–Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) unit prevented what could have been a major security breach.
“Upon receipt of the report, I immediately directed the Commander, EOD-CBRN Base 13 Maiduguri, to mobilize and proceed to the scene. The team swiftly cordoned off the area and, in line with standard operating procedures, successfully rendered the device safe,” the Commissioner said.
According to him, preliminary findings revealed that the device, which had two protruding wires, was strategically planted by persons yet to be identified, with the intent to cause destruction and endanger public safety.
Items recovered at the scene included a hand plier, a T-shirt and a pair of shoes, which are now part of exhibits as investigations continue.
CP Abdulmajid further disclosed that following the operation, police officers engaged residents of the area in sensitization and safety awareness sessions, urging them to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious objects or movements to security agencies.
“The cooperation of the public remains critical to preventing acts of sabotage. We urge residents to be alert at all times and support the Police with timely and credible information,” he added.
The Commissioner has also directed all Divisional Police Officers across the state to intensify patrols and strengthen security around critical public and private infrastructure, particularly communication facilities and other sensitive assets.
Reassuring residents, the Police Command said the situation has been fully brought under control and normal activities have resumed in the affected area.
“The Borno State Police Command remains unwavering in its commitment to the protection of lives and property,” the Commissioner stated, while advising members of the public to remain cautious as investigations into the incident continue.
Emergency lines provided by the Command include 0806 807 5581 and 0802 347 3293.
The statement was signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso Anipr, FCAI.
