The Federal High Court sitting in Gombe has dismissed a suit challenging the motorcycle restriction policy enforced by the Gombe State Police Command, ruling that the measure is lawful and within the mandate of the Nigeria Police Force.
The policy restricting motorcycle movement between 7:00 p.m and 6:00 a.m was introduced on June 12, 2025, following what the Command described as rising security concerns and the growing use of motorcycles in criminal activities across the metropolis.
Confirming the judgement on Tuesday night, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, said the court affirmed that the Command acted within its constitutional powers.
According to him, “The Federal High Court today dismissed the suit filed against the Gombe State Police Command challenging the motorcycle restriction policy. The Court affirmed that the restriction is lawful and falls within the constitutional mandate of the Nigeria Police Force to ensure public safety, maintain law and order, and prevent crime.”
He explained that the restriction remains a key part of the Command’s proactive crime-prevention strategy.
“This policy was introduced after rising security concerns, especially the increasing involvement of motorcycles in various criminal activities. It has helped us strengthen operational control and improve police visibility,” he added.
Abdullahi noted that the Commissioner of Police, CP Bello Yahaya, appreciated the support of residents.
“The Command, under the leadership of CP Bello Yahaya, appreciates the continued cooperation of the good people of Gombe State. We remain committed to sustaining peace, security, and public safety across the state,” he said.
The Police Command said further details of the court ruling will be made public in due course.
